Der letzte Mann

When Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau made 'Der letzte Mann' (known in English as 'The Last Laugh') in 1924, he could not have known that his film would still be crowned with superlatives in 2017! Or that the story, about a doorman who loses his job, would lose nothing of its relevance in today’s Europe in crisis. The Brussels Philharmonic gives a live performance with a new soundtrack to this crazy, marvellous black-and-white world.

World Soundtrack Awards Gala

The World Soundtrack Awards, the most important film music prizes in the world, will be distributed for the 17th time this year. The distribution of the prizes will be followed by an impressive concert, with a special focus this year on the relationship between jazz and cinema.

In the year when jazz celebrates its 100th anniversary, there will be a number of guests of honour on stage: Terence Blanchard, jazz trumpeter and regular composer for the films of Spike Lee (Malcolm X, Do The Right Thing), and David Shire, known for his scores for The Conversation and Farewell, My Lovely, among others.

Symphonic Jazz Concert

Film and jazz: two art forms that began to flourish a century ago and have over the years intersected, influenced and enriched each other. In the ’Symphonic Jazz Concert’, we look back at the thrilling scores and tunes from legendary jazz scores of the past.

Expect some tunes by Henry Mancini, one of the most adroit instrumentalists ever to work in films; some themes by Lalo Schifrin whose clever inventiveness colours his TV scores for Mission Impossible and Mannix; Elmer Bernstein’s striking jazz score for The Man with the Golden Arm; the jazzy rollicking Who Framed Roger Rabbit? score by Alan Silvestri, a composer with a chameleon personality, and much more!

Modern Times

With Modern Times (1936) Chaplin – under pressure from the rise of the ‘talkies’ – produced his last silent film. The movie, a commentary on the industrialization of the world, was nevertheless his greatest success. The images of Chaplin amidst the immense cogwheels of a giant factory machine have become legendary, as has the struggles of the tramp against the machines and the US bureaucracy.

The famous character of the tramp so masterfully embodied by Chaplin continues to engage our imaginations. Certainly this jewel of a classic film, for old and young, with its familiar, hilarious as well as moving moments can today more than ever give us something to think about.

Chaplin composed the music for the film himself, and the score has now been lovingly restored.
