Oscarnominations 'The Artist'

Nominated in no fewer than 10 categories, including ‘Best Picture’ and ‘Best Original Score’!

Tuesday 24 January: this afternoon in Los Angeles the actress Jennifer Lawrence presented the official list of nominees for the 84th Academy Awards.

A nice surprise:  the widely successful and to favourite film ‘The Artist’ by Michel Hazanavicius has been nominated in no fewer than 10 categories, including  ‘Best Picture’ and ‘Best Original Score’.

‘The Artist’ already counts an impressive number of triumphs.

It began with the Cannes Film Festival in May 2011, where both critics and the public were wild about the film. Success followed:  Jean Dujardin won the ‘Best Actor Award’, and the dog Uggie won the ‘Palm Dog Award’ for the best performance by a dog in a film.

Last week the film carried off several awards at the Golden Globes, winning three of the six nominations: Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Actor for Jean Dujardin, and Best Score for Ludovic Bource.

The film has, since then, received additional recognition with the Producers Guild Award (for producer Thomas Langmann) and is nominated for several BAFTA Awards, including ‘Best Film’ and ‘Best Original Music’. The Bafta Awards will be distributed on 12 February at the Royal Opera House in London. [Read more]

The triumphal march of this silent film is also a Belgian triumph: composer Ludovic Bource and his team spent a week in Brussels April 2011 (at Studio 4 in the Flagey building) recording the soundtrack, performed by the  Brussels Philharmonic conducted by Ernst van Tiel, the Brussels Jazz Orchestra under the baton of Frank Vaganée, and pianist Jef Neve.

The Brussels Philharmonic warmly congratulates the entire team of ‘The Artist’ and joins them in keeping their fingers crossed for the outcome of the 84th Academy Awards on Sunday 26 February!
