Scoring from the heart of Europe

For many years, the Brussels Philharmonic has shown a deep and genuine interest in film music and its composers. Through its close relationship with Film Fest Gent, in which the orchestra has proved to be a vital part of the success of the World Soundtrack Awards, we have had the pleasure of working in the studio and on stage with great composers such as Howard Shore, Hans Zimmer, Angelo Badalamenti, Craig Armstrong, Alan Silvestri and many others.

These collaborations have resulted in CD recordings, soundtracks and concerts – in all more than 40 different projects in Belgium, France, the Netherlands and the UK during the last two years!

For these recordings the Brussels Philharmonic has received international recognition, with the Golden Globe-winning soundtrack for The Aviator by Martin Scorsese (2005), and the Oscar-winning music for The Artist (2011).

Film Fest Gent

Each year the Film Fest Gent and the Brussels Philharmonic feature a great composer of film music on the annual film music CD. Thus it is that Craig Armstrong (Moulin Rouge!), Mychael Danna (Little Miss Sunshine), Angelo Badalamenti (Mulholland Drive), Shigeru Umebayashi (House of Flying Daggers) and Gabriel Yared (The English Patient) already have collections of their finest music.

In 2013, Film Fest Gent and the Brussels Philharmonic presented a compilation CD with an ode to Scorsese: a director with an unusual musical taste. The 2014 edition was dedicated to American film music composer and former drummer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Cliff Martinez. At the 2015 edition Alan Silvestri was the central guest, in 2016 Ryuichi Sakamoto, and in 2017 Terence Blanchard.

"La reconstruction sonore est d’une fidélité remarquable" [OST Marguerite]
Diapason, FR, 2015

De Standaard, BE, 2015

"Ghent’s affinity for the traditional orchestral score was beautifully demonstrated by the event’s house band of sorts, the world-class Brussels Philharmonic."
Variety Magazine, USA, 2014

"Brussels Philharmonic rondt haar eerste seizoen na de Oscartriomf van 'The Artist' in glans af. Gunther Broucke: “In alle stilte hebben we het voorbije jaar zeker vijftien filmproducties opgenomen. Parade’s End en The White Queen, onder meer. We streven ernaar om in Vlaanderen een centre of excellence te worden dat de opname van filmmuziek internationaal op de kaart zet.”
De Morgen, BE, 2013

"Het Brussels Philharmonic speelde heerlijk. Geleid door Dirk Brossé voelt dat orkest zich als een vis in het water in de diepe vijver van de filmmuziek."
Het Nieuwsblad, BE, 2011

"The music is performed by a fantastic orchestra!" [Gabriel Yared about Brussels Philharmonic during Film Fest Gent]
Hollywoodreporter, USA, 2011
