introduction
Mischa Maisky performs pyrotechnics on the cello, but above all he is a complete artist, who leaves no one indifferent. The spirit and lyricism of his playing express the urgency of a musician desperate to communicate his deepest emotions with the public.
“I’m genuinely the kind of musician who tends to exaggerate a lot of things. Because I don’t play on stage for connoisseurs... I think of people who are listening to this music for the first time in their lives, to help them to discover and notice and appreciate. I prefer to do too much than to do too little, and I hope people will enjoy.” Mischa Maisky
Hector Berlioz was certainly one of the most original and innovative musicians of his day: with his Symphonie fantastique, he matured into a pioneer of programme music, gave a new meaning to the term orchestration, and introduced the concept of the ‘idée fixe’. Partly thanks to its recurring musical motif, which gives voice to the theme of love in the story, his Symphonie fantastique is one of the most dramatic and exciting works of the nineteenth century repertoire.
