Beyond The Score

With Beyond The Score, Brussels Philharmonic looks beyond the notes, exploring what symphonic music awakens in other voices in our society. Music touches us all, and always tells a story. But what's that same story through the eyes of a poet? Or through the work of a Brussels-based artist? How do they write new layers over the music of Ravel, Scriabin, or Stravinsky – and does that change not only our perspective, but also yours?
Beyond The Score is creation, encounter, and cross-pollination with the wider arts field. More voices. More impulses. And above all: music. More than music.

A TRIUMPH OF ORGANIC INNOVATION

For this Beyond The Score, the sea flows between the notes. Shifting like the tide, orchestral masterpieces merge with the sonic seascapes of Vera Cavallin and Christophe Albertijn to form a single, seamless wave.

Through her Terrasonica project, Vera Cavallin is building a haunting archive of endangered sounds that captures the fading echoes of our natural world—from animal species to environments at risk of disappearing. “For this concert, I will create a soundscape in which field recordings and an acoustic instrument reconnect with one another, creating a sonic universe linked to the sea—what it evokes and its frequencies—while also carrying a message about the need to protect the element from which everything originated.”

Beyond The Score: Sibelius 7 · 03.12.2026 · Flagey

Just as ocean waves surge toward the horizon in a perpetuum mobile, the music in this programme unfolds almost without beginning or end. With eyes fixed on the infinite, Saariaho, Britten, and Sibelius create works deeply entwined with personal experience, the raw power of nature, and the sea. For this Beyond The Score, the sea flows between the notes. Shifting like the tide, orchestral masterpieces merge with the sonic seascapes of Vera Cavallin and Christophe Albertijn to form a single, seamless wave.

Holst: The Planets · 23.01.2027 · Brussels Planetarium

Seven planets, seven impressions. The concept is as simple as it is genius: Gustav Holst created his own big bang by giving a voice to the planets and their influence on the human psyche. To celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Royal Observatory, The Planets resounds where music and the cosmos collide: the Planetarium. Eight projectors transform the giant 23-meter dome into a spectacular window onto the universe. An immersive journey takes you past distant planets, deep into the starry night sky. A unique experience that literally and figuratively gives Holst's music wings.
