On the programme: Antonín Dvořák’s Seventh Symphony, a true outlier. Unlike his upbeat Eighth and Ninth, this bold work is packed with melancholy and stormy tragedy. It is direct, powerful, and deeply moving. Conductor Michael Seal takes you inside the music, sharing stories about the composer and how the orchestra brings the piece to life.
“Love, God, and my native land”
Inspired by Brahms’s Third, Dvořák knew from his first sketches that his Czech homeland would take center stage. He wrote to a friend: “What is in my mind is love, God, and my native land.” Along with the Eighth and Ninth, this symphony is widely seen as the absolute peak of his orchestral work.
