Jun Märkl has long been a highly respected interpreter of the core Germanic repertoire from both the symphonic and operatic traditions, and more recently for his refined and idiomatic Debussy, Ravel and Messiaen.

The son of a German concertmaster and Japanese concert pianist, Märkl was surrounded by music from an early age. First he played piano and violin, later switching to conducting. "Music was my outlet." He studied with big names like Sergiu Celibidache, Gustav Meier, Leonard Bernstein and Seiji Ozawa.

In his spare time, Märkl enjoys wild camping, and he trained as a ranger in Africa: "Because I am so aware of my mixed background, I can easily relate to other cultures. I spend a lot of time in hotel rooms, so as soon as I get the chance, I go out with my motorhome: this is how I discover other countries and cultures."

Jun Märkl is a regular guest of the Brussels Philharmonic.
