soundlab #3: Holosound

Holosound is a pyramid-shaped aluminium structure. Step inside, and your movements turn into streams of noise. At the top hangs an ultrasonic receiver which, together with transmitters and loudspeakers, translates every motion into sound. Using ring modulation, three noise bands are created – each emerging from a different speaker.

the Invisible Instrument

Created in the 1980s, the Holosound installation by Logos and Godfried-Willem Raes comes from the same period as Brewaeys’ Second Symphony, performed in the concert Fasten Seat Belts! Both are striking examples of Flemish sound art and contemporary music that gained international recognition in the late 20th century.

Fasten Seat Belts! · 30.01.2026 · Brussels Philharmonic LAB @ Flagey

With Ilan Volkov at the helm, the Brussels Philharmonic presents the Second and Sixth Symphonies by Luc Brewaeys: in the latter, Brewaeys brings together everything he stands for - the vibrant coloration of 20th-century spectralism, a bold orchestral configuration and a confrontation with electronics. Clearly influenced by that élan, Daan Janssens composed a new concerto for violin, orchestra and surround electronics.
