Ilan Volkov, who has been conducting all over the world since his breakthrough at the age of 19, is internationally renowned as a passionate champion of contemporary music – or, as one reviewer put it: “He eats complex scores for brunch.”
As principal guest conductor of the Brussels Philharmonic, he focuses on projects where today’s music not only takes centre stage, but is also explored, tested, and exposed to other art forms and performance practices. A bold commitment to experimentation and the future.

LAB I: MUSICAL PROMPTS
“This program spotlights two composers I’ve often collaborated with at the Tectonics Festival: Annea Lockwood and George Lewis. Both are not only uniquely original voices but also deeply inspiring individuals whose insights leave a lasting impression.
As a young man, Lewis played with jazz legends before pioneering electronic music in the 70s and 80s. His work is explosive yet tender, rich in contrast and beauty. Annea Lockwood, a sound artist fascinated by the natural world, brings a rare vocal work to this program, which I am thrilled to perform with the Vlaams Radiokoor. Completing this ‘American’ journey are Tyshawn Sorey and Raven Chacon—two brilliant young composers whose music explores the inspiring complexity of genre and heritage.”
