Audio installation: Obscuur

Beneath the surface of the city lies a world of hidden sounds. Transformed and shaped by the inner structures of the city, these sounds are the echoes of urban life. If we listen carefully, we can hear the rhythms and flows of the city resonating through the acoustic spaces of the underground.

Obscuur is a multichannel sound piece that reflects on the urban underground and the practice of sonic awareness and architectural listening.

Landforms

Landforms is the sound collective of sound artists Gillis Van der Wee and Lotte Nijsten. Together, they create sound compositions, sound installations and mixed media performances, in which they explore the entanglements between humans and their acoustic environment. In their work, they look for ways to gain more insight in the ecological and social contexts of their surrounding landscapes through walking, listening and encountering. Their works are featured on local and international radio stations, festivals and theatres. Their sound piece Obscuur was awarded with the “Prix Découvert Pierre Schaeffer” from Phonurgia Nova in 2022.

Lotte Nijsten (1994°) creates sound pieces, performances and audio documentaries. She earned a master’s degree in Language and Literature from the VUB and graduated as a radio producer from RITCS. She is a board member of Klankverbond, the Flemish professional association for audio producers. As a PhD researcher, Lotte’s current artistic research explores how ecological sound and radio art can reconnect listeners with the ecosystems of the Scheldt Estuary.

Gillis Van der Wee (1992°) is a sound artist and composer, with a focus on field recording. He earned a degree in Sociology from KULeuven and graduated as a sound designer from RITCS. In addition to his own artistic practice, he works as an independent sound designer and foley artist for film. He also teaches at LUCA School of Arts in the animation department.
