soundlab #1: palaver

Palaver is an installation with a microphone, a computer and organ robots. Speak, sing or whisper into the mic – and hear your voice transformed into organ sounds.
-----

electronics & the voice

The microphone captures your voice, while a computer analyses its spectrum in real time. The techniques behind Palaver—spectrum analysis and timbre manipulation—are well known in contemporary vocal music. In this way, the installation refers to the concert Barely Minimal: a journey through minimal music, with electronics and the human voice at its core.

Palaver is an installation by Logos Foundation (robot builders: Godfried-Willem Raes; interactive application: Hans Roels & Kristof Lauwers).

Barely Minimal · 04.10.2025 · Brussels Philharmonic LAB @ Flagey

Music stripped to its essence—where sound meets silence, and silence becomes sound. In a world full of noise, minimalism creates space for stillness, and that’s where its power lies.

With this programme, Ilan Volkov questions the idea of ‘minimal’: what do we label as such, and what else—seen from another angle—might also be considered minimal? An experimental evening with electronics and voice as key elements.

soundlab #2: TERMAN

Terman brings together four theremins, antennas, microphones and analogue synthesizers. You play the theremin without touching it – simply by moving your hands or body closer to or further from the antenna.
-----

the theremin

Everyone has heard it: the theremin sounds otherworldly, a little eerie. That’s why it so often turns up in sci-fi films and alien soundscapes. Think of Miklós Rózsa’s Spellbound and The Lost Weekend, Bernard Herrmann’s The Day the Earth Stood Still, Justin Hurwitz’s First Man, or TV shows like Midsomer Murders.

Specially for the concert Supra Natural, Logos created the Terman installation. The theremin was one of the very first electronic instruments. At the Supra Natural concert, it sets the stage for a parade of electronics: from a phonograph and a 1907 wax cylinder recording, to tape and live electronics.

Electronics in the concert hall? Think of it as a spark of invisible magic—something mechanical yet alive, opening up the symphonic sound, enriching it, or pushing back against it. Ilan Volkov brings together four composers who let two sound worlds clash and collide—or seamlessly blend.

soundlab #3: Holosound

Holosound is a pyramid-shaped aluminium structure. Step inside, and your movements turn into streams of noise. At the top hangs an ultrasonic receiver which, together with transmitters and loudspeakers, translates every motion into sound. Using ring modulation, three noise bands are created – each emerging from a different speaker.

Invisible Instrument

Created in the 1980s, the Holosound installation by Logos and Godfried-Willem Raes comes from the same period as Brewaeys’ Second Symphony, performed in the concert Fasten Seat Belts! Both are striking examples of Flemish sound art and contemporary music that gained international recognition in the late 20th century.

Fasten Seat Belts! · 30.01.2026 · Brussels Philharmonic LAB @ Flagey

With Ilan Volkov at the helm, the Brussels Philharmonic presents the Second and Sixth Symphonies by Luc Brewaeys: in the latter, Brewaeys brings together everything he stands for - the vibrant coloration of 20th-century spectralism, a bold orchestral configuration and a confrontation with electronics. Clearly influenced by that élan, Daan Janssens composed a new concerto for violin, orchestra and surround electronics.
