DISCOVER A BRAND NEW SEASON OF THE PODCAST SERIES OOR-SPRONG
Daan Janssens: Violin Concerto
#1 "Dezelfde noot vanuit verschillende perspectieven." (NL/FR) (The same note from different perspectives)[listen on Spotify]
A new year, a new creation, a new season of Oor-Sprong. This time, we dive into the Violin Concerto that will premiere on 30 January 2026 during the concert Fasten Seat Belts!, together with composer Daan Janssens and soloist Samuel Nemtanu. In this first episode, we’re a fly on the wall at their very first rehearsal together, discovering which ideas the composition has grown from.
#2 "Als je werkt met electronics is het nog belangrijker om een bepaalde keuze te maken." (NL/FR) (When you work with electronics, making clear choices becomes even more important) [listen on Spotify]
In the second episode, composer Daan Janssens and soloist Samuel Nemtanu test the electronics for the new work at the Centre Henri Pousseur in Liège. They explain how composing for — and performing with — the computer actually works, and how electronics shape both the writing and the playing of the piece. The episode also draws a connection to the music of Luc Brewaeys, whose work will also be featured on the programme in January.
#3 "Mijn werk is af, ik kan er niets meer aan veranderen." (NL) (My work is finished, I can’t change anything anymore.) [listen on Spotify]
Composer Daan Janssens has put the final notes on paper. The solo part is complete, the concerto fully orchestrated. In this final episode of the second season of Oor-Sprong, he reflects on how he approached the writing process — with nods to illustrious predecessors and clear links to his own musical language.
Podcast spoken in NL and FR.

It all began with a simple email. What followed grew into a years-long exchange between composer and soloist: an ongoing dialogue filled with sketches, questions, and new impulses. “For me as a composer, it’s very interesting to go through the score together with a musician. You let yourself be nourished and inspired that way,” says Daan Janssens. The creative process becomes a true dialogue, in which Samuel Nemtanu can bring in his own playing style and preferences. “You know who you’re writing for,” Daan adds.
Mission: Violin
Daan Janssens is writing a new violin concerto for Samuel Nemtanu, principal second violin. Mission: Violin follows their collaboration, from the first sketches to the world premiere at Flagey, with surround electronics forming an essential sonic universe around the orchestra.

With Ilan Volkov at the helm, the Brussels Philharmonic presents the Second and Sixth Symphonies by Luc Brewaeys: in the latter, Brewaeys brings together everything he stands for - the vibrant coloration of 20th-century spectralism, a bold orchestral configuration and a confrontation with electronics. Clearly influenced by that élan, Daan Janssens composed a new concerto for violin, orchestra and surround electronics.
