Summer Sounds #5 · Justine Rigutto

violin at Brussels Philharmonic

I am Justine Rigutto, a violin tutti player with the Brussels Philharmonic since 2018. I have been dancing and making music since I was a little girl. Swan Lake was the reason I wanted to play the violin, so playing in an orchestra has always been my dream. I also love circus and multidisciplinary projects... one life is not enough!

I play…

I’ve been playing the violin since I was five. As one of the highest instruments in the orchestra, it often carries the beautiful themes and melodies — and I love that.

Maybe that’s why I’ve recently become curious about lower instruments, like the double bass or trombone. In fact, I even started taking trombone lessons from our colleague William last year.

I listen to...

I discovered Balkan music in recent years. Brussels is such a rich mix of cultures, and that’s how I first got into playing it. Since then, I’ve taken courses in Bulgaria and Romania. I love exploring music beyond the classical world — and especially playing with musicians from all kinds of backgrounds!

Besides that, hard rock and metal have been with me since day one. My dad played in a cover band, so I grew up with the sounds of Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC.

your ideal summer tunes?

Goran Bregović · Hopa Cupa Jill (piccolo) and I are meeting at a festival in the mountains near my village in Italy, where we’ll see a Goran Bregović concert.

Adriano Celentano · Il ragazzo della via Gluck is the perfect Italian vibe for the 1,300 km road trip to my father's village.

Deep Purple · Child in Time This might be one of the first songs I ever heard in my life... pure nostalgia!

Ivo Papazov · Ivaylovsko Horo remind me of the Bulgarian vibes from the Balkan music courses in summer.

System of a down · Suite-Pee This song has stuck with me since my teenage years. We used to hang out for hours in the pool in my parents' garden, with System of a Down blasting in the background all afternoon.

And... any guilty pleasures?

Like most girls born in the 90s, I was a Britney Spears fan. So I won’t change the channel if Hit Me Baby One More Time comes on the radio!

summer plans?

Like almost every summer, my whole family gathers in our small village in Friuli Venezia Giulia... This means: sun, the local sagra (village festival), mountain rivers, hikes, gelato and gnocchi della zia... and, of course, many Spritz Aperol!

This year, my dear colleague and friend Jill is coming along with her family. I can't wait to show them my little summer paradise!
