#01 Emily Ross

I’m Emily, second oboist in Brussels Philharmonic since 2025 – officially, at least, unofficially a little longer than that. I’m also the (unelected) party organiser for the wind section, an important job that I take very seriously!
Playing in an orchestra has been my dream since I was little; I love making music with a big group of people.

Oboe, for sure

Originally, I was a cellist but it wasn’t quite the right fit for me. I started the oboe when I was 9 and have never looked back. I can also bash through My Heart Will Go On from Titanic on the piano, but that’s about the extent of my keyboard talents – to the dismay of my Dad who was a pianist and tried his best to teach me.

If I could learn another instrument, I'd switch lanes and become a singer. I’m obsessed with opera, with all its incredible music and dramatic qualities, so in another life I’d totally want to be belting out Vissi d’arte in a fabulous costume in an opera house somewhere.

Pop, please

I listen to a lot of pop music, almost exclusively so when I’m not working. It puts me in a good mood and makes the perfect soundtrack for cooking at home or walking around town.

Summer soundtrack

One classic I always return to is Walking on Sunshine by Katrina & the Waves. I have such fond memories of singing along to it at full volume with my dad in the car, windows down, speeding down the motorway. Another song that was on repeat in my childhood home as soon as the sun came out was Eso Beso by Nancy Ames. None of us spoke Spanish at the time, but we’d somehow sing along, making up words, with full choreography and enthusiasm!

All my favourite summer songs are tied to memories with family and friends, whether that’s dancing around the house as a child, or hanging out with friends at the park or at festivals.

and... guilty pleasures?

Most of the pop music I listen to would probably be considered a guilty pleasure, but I don’t feel that guilty about it! Pop bangers from the 90s and 00’s will always have a place in my heart, and I’m confident that my in-depth knowledge of Spice Girls lyrics will come in handy one day.

Summer mode: on

This summer I’m heading to the Czech Republic to catch some concerts and to Berlin to visit a close friend. During the season I tend to be pretty busy, so I like spending the summer catching up with friends and family who live abroad. And if I can discover somewhere new along the way, even better!
