Summer Sounds #4 · Luzia Vieira

double bass with the Brussels Philharmonic

I'm Luzia Vieira, and I've been part of the double bass section of the Brussels Philharmonic since 2022. Music has always been my greatest passion—I've been singing and making music for as long as I can remember. I fell in love with the bass when I was 11, and that love never left. I play both double bass and bass guitar, and over the years I’ve had the joy of performing in classical orchestras, jazz ensembles, and all kinds of bands—from funk and rock to bossa nova, metal, and more.
These days, I’m involved in a few side projects: a bossa nova trio where I play double bass and sing, a rock band where I play bass guitar, and a bass quartet with fellow orchestra members. That’s how I love to spend my free time!

playlist: Luzia's favourite summer tunes

I play...

I play double bass, bass guitar, and I sing. I'd love to get better at piano and guitar, and during my Master’s I also started learning drums — something I’d really like to pick up again someday. If only there were more hours in a day!

I listen to...

I have playlists for every mood, I could never survive on classical music alone! I only truly feel like myself when I get to explore and share all the sides of my musical identity.

One moment you’ll find me at Flagey or Bozar enjoying a symphony, the next at AB or a stadium rocking out to metal. Or you might catch me in a jazz club, dancing salsa to a live band, or losing myself in an EDM night.

Some artists I’ve been listening to lately are Gojira, Rush, Dirty Loops, Alice in Chains, Tool, Tim Bernardes, Avishai Cohen, and Salvador Sobral.

Your ideal summer tunes?

I’m from Portugal, and in my village there’s a strong samba and carnival tradition. Even though our carnival takes place in winter, we dance samba in the streets all year round! Brazilian music has always been a part of my upbringing. At the beach bars where I spent my summers, live bands would often play these rhythms. Maybe that’s why I now have a bossa nova trio here in Brussels!

My playlist is the soundtrack of my childhood summers. I’ve also added some more recent discoveries: Tim Bernardes, Mariana Froes, and Anna Tréa.

And... any guilty pleasures perhaps?

Even though I’m a metalhead and a rock girl at heart, I still catch myself singing along to super catchy pop songs. With just a little encouragement, you might even hear me doing full-on Shakira or Britney Spears impressions.

summer plans?

This summer, I’ll be teaching at the Mondengo International Music Academy in Coimbra, Portugal, before heading on tour with Orquestra XXI across the country. After that, I’m looking forward to some well-earned rest on the beach where I grew up, soaking up the sun with family and friends.
